This week’s find at the Farmer’s Market… Rabbit Pie
It’s now a family ritual to head to the Cedar Park Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning. I am so happy that there is finally one near us that is so big and diverse. We have some vendors we usually go to such as the lady that sells baked goods that always wants me to trade Zack for some pastries, the Goodpop cart for some organic popsicles, and this lady that sells fresh beignets. I got my Greenling box of organic vegetables delivered on Friday so I didn’t buy any fruit or vegetables.
At the Kocurek Family Artisanal Chartuterie, I bought a pound of bacon and rabbit pie. While in line, two old men were talking about how rabbits use to be really popular in Texas but there was some sort of disease so people stopped eating it and it never really came back on the dinner table.
Rabbit pie is like a chicken pot pie except with rabbit meat. It’s already cooked and I had to just put it in the oven for half an hour to heat it up. I don’t remember eating rabbit before but my mom says it’s popular in Vietnam (probably the whole Indochine thing because rabbit is big in France) so maybe I have had it in my youth. Breaking through the crust, I was hesitant about the first bite but it tasted heavenly. I would compare it to slow roasted pulled pork. It was not hard or gamey at all and the pastry and vegetables were just perfectly cooked. I am so glad they have these wonderful stalls to tempt my culinary taste buds every weekend.

Do not trade Zack. Ideally you’d want both Zack and the pastries, so then Zack can nibble on some.
