Breaking the Ice

I saw this idea on a friend of a friend’s website called The Picky Apple.  You just grab a bunch of their toys and freeze them in a block of ice then give them a hammer to break the toys out.  We used a mallet instead.  It was fun to go around the house finding toys he hadn’t seen for a while and I even threw in one of his Crocs.  Andy pretended to be looking for his Crocs and then I bring out the block of ice.  It was funny because you can see him trying to take it all in.  I asked him how we were going to rescue his toys from the ice and he suggested a screwdriver.  Seemed a little dangerous so we didn’t test his hypothesis but I thought it was a great idea to use that as an ice pick.

We took the block outside and gave him the mallet and Andy showed him how to hit it.  It was a lot harder than you would think.  Maybe that’s why they suggest using a hammer.  Once he was able to break the big pieces, we were able to throw some on the ground to rescue them from the ice.  Even Zack wanted a piece of the action.

It was fun for a while but then Sean just started playing with the toys instead of breaking the ice.  The few things he didn’t get out, I placed on the window ledge and had the sun rescue them in a more peaceful manner.
